LIVES WILL BE CHANGED
MS Queensland are please to announce that the Life at Annerley program is now complete!
The spacious and contemporary complex will house eight people with MS that need full time support. The residents have now all moved into their new home. Each room is painted a different colour as chosen by the residents to represent their own unique style.
With their new home being in the heart of cosmopolitan Annerley, residents are close to all services including shops, banks, transport and hotels. Our aim is to give life back to people with MS to empower them to live more independently in housing that is within the community.
Life at Annerley - Official Launch
Bruce Milligan (Regional Executive Director Brisbane, Department of Communities) and Jonathan Loraine (President MS Queensland) officially launched MS Queensland’s new Life at Annerley accommodation unit on Friday 19 February 2010.
Life at Annerley is the first project to be completed as part of MS Australia – QLD’s giving life back deinstitutionalisation program. It is designed to empower people with multiple sclerosis, with high care needs to live more independently in housing that is within the community, not separate in a nursing home.
The new residential development consists of four modern townhouses that have been especially designed for eight young disabled adults with high care needs and who were previously living in a nursing home environment.
Special guests who also attended included; Dr Bronwyn Morkham (National Director, Young People in Nursing Home Alliance), Robert Pask (National MS Advocates Program Co-ordinator) and Trevor Farrell (MS Australia – QLD Executive Director) and
The presentation proceeded with the unveiling of plaques to officially launch Life at Annerley dedicated to giving life back to people with multiple sclerosis and finally a tour of the units.
Dr Bronwyn Morkham - National Director, Young People in Nursing Homes National Alliance “The bar has now been raised in supported accommodation for people with disabilities and MS Australia – QLD with Life at Annerley has created a new benchmark in supported accomodation.”
It is MS Australia – QLD’s vision that Life at Annerley will be a model of care that can be emulated by other organisations, to help expand the currently limited opportunities for appropriate accommodation for young disabled adults. MS Australia – QLD believes that supported residential services should contribute to ensuring that the conditions of the everyday life of people with MS are the same as, or close as possible to, norms and patterns which are available to people in the general community.
Thank you to everyone who attended the ceremony.
