The Sunday Mail on December 14, 2009 published an article regarding an alleged link between the cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil and 'MS-like symptoms'.
MS Australia - QLD cannot comment on the individual cases mentioned in the article, but as the official organising body representing people with MS would like to emphasise the following points:
- There is no scientific evidence that any vaccination causes MS
- Dr Ian Sutton from St Vincent’s Hospital, who published the results mentioned in the article, states that the "Gardasil vaccination is not the cause of MS"
- The cases mentioned are extremely rare and according to the TGA are "not demonstrably higher than would be expected to occur by chance"
- Professor Bill Carroll, chair of MS Research Australia's research management council and our official medical spokesperson, maintains the benefits of the vaccination far outweigh the risks
