Professor Lawrence Steinman, of the Stanford University School of Medicine in the UK, has been awarded the 2011 Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) Charcot Award.
This prestigious award recognises Professor Steinman's lifetime achievement in research into the understanding of treatment of MS.
In a research career spanning more than 30 years, Professor Steinman has focused on:
- the immunological mechanisms of relapse and remission in multiple sclerosis;
- the identification and characterisation of genes that regular inflammation in the brain; and
- the development of novel therapies that modulate the immune system.
