Adopting strategies to keep employees diagnosed with a chronic illness in work is a critical issue that could benefit taxpayers.
According to the AIHW Chronic Disease and Participation in Work Survey (Feb 2009), people with chronic illnesses are 60% more likely not to be in the labour force than people without.
Research also shows the figures for those who are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) are even worse - more than 80% become unemployed within the first 10 years of diagnosis.
