E-mail Print PDF

In a world first, heroes to the multiple sclerosis cause were honoured by Her Excellency the Governor of Queensland, Ms Penelope Wensley AC, at a reception to mark World MS Day on Wednesday 25 May.

The prestigious awards were taken out by Griffith University, awarded the MS Inspiration Award and the Women’s Legal Service, receiving the inaugural MS Champion Award for their work with employment and MS.

The Office for Research - Griffith University took out the MS Inspiration Award for their work with Gary Allen, diagnosed with MS in 2003, who said retaining employment with Griffith University has been a contributing factor to both his health and happiness.

Women’s Legal Service at Annerley which provides legal advice to women in Queensland was awarded the MS Champion Award for their work with Leiza Richmond who was diagnosed with MS at age 25 and has been living with the disease for 17 years.

Outstanding organisations such as Griffith University and the Women’s Legal Service have set a precedent for the high standard other employers should, and can, meet in order to support an employee with a chronic illness like MS. Our congratulations and thanks go to all people living with MS who nominated their employer or carer for this year's awards.

The MS Heroes awards are part of World MS Day on Wednesday 25 May, which kicks off MS Awareness Week in Brisbane from 25 May to 5 June 2011.
