Disability reform - the new portfolio dedicated to a NDIS
This month Minister Jenny Macklin was appointed to the new position of Minister of Disability Reform, acknowledging the Government's commitment to ensuring intensive planning into what our future could look like takes place, and that transformation for the NDIS on such a large scale occurs.
The NDIS signals a significant transformation from Australia's current disability scheme and the intensive planning for what our future could look like has begun.
Provided below are some key elements of the NDIS:
- A National Disability Insurance Scheme will give people with a disability the power to make their own choices for their insurance funding, making sure they get the regular care, support, therapy, and equipment they need.
- It will be a scheme like Medicare that provides a secure and consistent pool of funds for services and support.
- The proposed scheme will offer an 'investment' in your health rather than 'support'. Timely interventions, appropriate aids and equipment, training and development will be seen as an investment in a person rather than welfare support. This will provide more positive results for people with a disability, their families and carers.
We are asking every person to join and support the implementation of the NDIS. If you can assist, please make sure you have signed the petition and get your family and friends to support this once in a generation chance for change.
2012 will be an even bigger year for the NDIS with the development and foundations laid, so please keep up-to-date with our monthly updates and news here at msqld.org and at ndis.org.au
