Numerous gym based classes including:

  • Pilates
  • Yoga

The Rehabilitation class:

  • Caters for small numbers (up to 4 per class)
  • Personal trainer with experience in working with people with MS takes the classes
  • Current Time: Friday 10.30am – 11.30 am
  • Cost: $9 per class (casual) or 5 weeks at $37.50 ($7.50 per class)
  • Possibility in the future of setting up an evening rehabilitation class for people with MS who cannot attend the gym during the day due to work commitments if enough interest is generated by contacting the MS Society’s Regional Services Co-ordinator (RSC) for the Southwest Region on 1800 177 591.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible for membership of the Ipswich PCYC
  • All class participants must be members ($30/year)
  • There is a possibility of a 3 visit VIP Trial membership to try activities before joining
  • On your first visit to the gym the personal trainer running the class will go through a medical screening/clearance form with you to ensure you are suited to the class.

How to access the service: Contact Shelley Clarke (Programmes Activities Officer) to express interest in the rehabilitation class and to arrange the 3 visit VIP trial membership.

Cost: $30 per year for PCYC membership. Each class has a different cost; see brochures on the website for this.

2. Goodna Aquatic Centre

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend; no medical clearance required.

Availability:

  • Personal Trainer led Aqua Aerobics Classes (held in the 16 metre pool):
    • Tuesday 9.00am & Friday 9.00am
    • Monday 6.15pm & Wednesday 6.15pm.

Services:

  • 2 pools:
    • 25 metre swimming pool (280)
    • 16 metre pool (for classes) 330.

Accessibility: The smaller pool is accessible with a ramp and a rail on the right hand side of the ramp. There is a pool wheelchair and accessible disabled toilets and changing facilities for people.

How to access the service: Anybody may go along to the pool for the classes which have large numbers of people attending them.

Cost: $9.90 per session or $88 for 10 sessions.

3. Ipswich 60s and Better Program

Am I eligible? Anybody with MS who is over 50 years of age and has the capacity to self fund the services available is eligible for membership and participation in the programmed activities.

Services: Programmed weekly activities (see activities programme attached).

How to access the service: Contact Anne Bertram (or any of the other office staff) to request information about the activities and become a member or contact the individuals listed for each of the programmed activities to receive further information about them.

Cost:

  • each organised class has a different cost (see activities programme attached);
  • membership of the organisation is $11 per year which gives you the newsletter each month detailing the organised activities in the area (membership is not compulsory).

4. McMahon's Swim Factory

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend the classes.

5. UQ Sport Ipswich

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend; medical clearance form will be completed with you on your first attendance.

Availability: Gym Opening Hours: 9.00am – 3.00pm Monday to Friday.

Services:

  • Gym with equipment
  • Exercise Therapist lead sessions (Gay Wilson) in a small quiet gym environment to receive assistance with setting up a programme for you and training in safe use of the equipment
  • Possibility of setting up an exercise class for people with MS in the future if enough interest is generated* by contacting the MS Society’s Regional Services Co-ordinator (RSC) for the Southwest Region on 1800 177 591
  • Tuesday and Thursday morning ‘Fit 4 Seniors Programme’ for over 50’s. Small Class led by Gay Wilson- $5 to attend with free tea or coffee after.

You need JavaScript enabled to view it to arrange an initial appointment to run through the medical screening form prior to setting up the programme, using the equipment in the gym or joining one of the classes in the gym.

Cost:

  • Casual $7 per visit (concession rate)
  • No joining fee
  • $5 per class for the ‘Fit for seniors’ Class

6. Spiritus Community Care - West Moreton

Am I eligible? HACC Eligible. Services can also be provided on a fee-for-service basis - this can be discussed at the time of referral. Must be a registered Spiritus Client to be eligible for a service.

Availability: There is a waiting list which varies. Clients are prioritised depending on their individual needs and an appointment will be scheduled as they become available.

Services:

  • Hydrotherapy Group Exercise Classes (physiotherapist led) currently at Goodna Aquatic Centre or Leichhardt Pool Monday and Wednesday 12.30 – 1.30
  • Chronic Condition Self Management (CCSM) Courses currently held at Silkstone Church Hall. Run 4 x yearly for 6 weeks each
  • Possibility of running a CCSM class for people with MS in the future if enough interest is generated by contacting MS Society’s Regional Services Co-ordinator (RSC) for the Southwest Region on 1 800 177 591.
  • Home based physiotherapy service:
    • 1 on 1 Home Exercise Programme Development 
    • Short periods of in home physiotherapy where required (as assessed by the physiotherapist).

How to access the service:

  • New Client: can self refer by ringing the Central Referral Agency who ask some basic information questions and send the referral to the relevant service i.e. physiotherapist who reviews this information and contacts the client to assess their needs
  • Can be referred by GP or other health professional
  • Can be referred by MS Society’s Regional Services Co-ordinator (RSC) for the Southwest Region on 1800 177 591.

Cost: $7 co-payment for all services; CCSM Courses are free to attend.

7. Ipswich Physiotherapy Centre (Private Practice)

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend the private practice.

Availability: There are generally no waiting lists to see a therapist.

Services:

  • Hydrotherapy: there is a small indoor pool on site for 1 on 1 assessment and treatments with a temperature that can be changed to suit people with MS as required
  • 1 on 1 Assessment and treatment in clinic rooms
  • Home Visits
  • Clinical Pilates Classes and individual consultations
  • Run ‘Actively Ageing’ programmes:
    • 4 week courses designed to assist with fitness and health as you age (not specific to MS but a valuable programme for all people)
    • Includes information regarding falls risk and prevention, lifting, nutrition, lifestyle changes, exercise and flexibility
    • Mini Classes of 2 sessions also available.
  • Possibility in the future of setting up an ‘Active Ageing for MS’ class for people with MS if enough interest is generated* by contacting the MS Society’s Regional Services Co-ordinator (RSC) for the Southwest Region on 1800 177 591. 

Cost:

  • This varies depending on the service required (enquire via a phone call to the clinic)
  • Services may be subsidised by health fund rebates (obtain details of the service from the clinic and contact your health fund for specific details)
  • Medicare EPC programme allows 5 Allied Health visits at nominal cost.  It is possible to have 5 physiotherapy visits under this scheme.

8. Physioactive and Integrated Work Health (Private Practice)

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend the private practice.

Availability: Opening Hours: 7.00am – 6.30pm Monday to Friday & Saturday 8am-1.00pm. There are generally no waiting lists to see a therapist
