1. Warwick Hospital Physiotherapy Department

Am I eligible? All people with MS eligible to attend.

Availability: There is a waiting list which varies. Clients are prioritised depending on their individual needs and an appointment will be scheduled as they become available. No set timeframe from referral to initial consultation can be established.

Services:

  • Out Patient Physiotherapy service:
    • 1 on 1 Physiotherapist Assessment & Development of a Home Exercise Programme or Gym Programme in the out patient department
    • 1 on 1 Physiotherapist aquatic assessment for development of a pool based exercise programme
  • Group Sessions
  • Balance:
    • Number of people attending and the content of the class varies depending on the participants needs
    • 8 week programme for each participant
    • Aimed at people at  people who are a moderate to high falls risk
  • Back Group:
    • Content: ½ hour mat work/gym ball (need ability to get on and off floor)
    • 20 minutes cardio/ balance (5 mins x 4 stations)
    • Physiotherapy outreach clinics in Inglewood and Millmerrin once a fortnight for assessment and treatment of clients there. 

How to access the service: Referral to the physiotherapy department from MS Society’s, Regional Services Co-ordinator (RSC) for the Southwest Region (1 800 177 591) or GP Referral to Alexandra Newcombe for physiotherapy assessment.

Cost: There is no cost involved.

 

2. Warwick Indoor Recreation & Aquatics Centre (WIRAC)

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend.

Availability: 

  • Monday – Friday: 5.30am - 8.00pm
  • Saturday: 9.00am - 5.00pm
  • Sunday: 9.00am - 5.00pm (Summer)
  • Sunday: 12.00pm - 5.00pm (Winter)
Services:
  • Gym and Pool: the facility is accessible; there is a ramp with railings on both sides to the front of the building
  • Gym:
    • Accessible Gym with cardiorespiratory and strengthening equipment
  • Pools - four options:
    • Hydrotherapy pool (35 degrees) - download the hydrotherapy brochure
      • This has a change room suitable for disabled access
      • It is easy to access with a gently sloped ramp & rails on both sides
      • There is a water wheelchair to assist access to this pool
      NOTE: 32 degrees is the recommended temperature for exercising in the pool for people with MS
    • Shallow ‘learn to swim’ pool; less than 1 metre deep
      • This pool is accessible by walking into the level access section of the ‘Rapids pool’ and walking around it to get to the side of this shallow pool where it could be possible to perform exercises in standing and hold on to the side of the pool there
    • 25 metre pool
    • Rapids pool
      • The area where pools 2,3 and 4 are also have a disabled toilet/change room.

How to access the service: Contact the gym and speak to Brendan Iles for information about activities in the gym or Karen Peters about activities in the pool. They will assist you with arranging an initial appointment to run through the suitable options for you.

If you would like a pool programme or gym programme set up for you before you go to W.I.R.A.C. then contact MS Society’s, Regional Services Co-ordinator (RSC) for the Southwest Region on 1 800 177 591 who will refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional for this.

  • This is a gentle physical exercise programme suitable for anyone who hasn’t done any physical exercise in a while
  • It is designed so you can exercise at your own pace

  • This programme is facilitated by ‘Community Options’

3. The Physiotherapy Centre (Warwick)

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend.

Services: Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology Services...

  • Physiotherapy:
    • 1 on 1 Musculoskeletal Assessment and treatment in clinic rooms
    • Development of individualised exercise programmes for home
  • Exercise Physiology:
    • 1 on 1 assessment in clinic rooms/onsite gym
    • Development of individualised exercise programmes for home
    • Pilates Classes (5-6 people).

4. Abshot Physiotherapy Clinic (Warwick)

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend.

5. Stanthorpe Hospital Physiotherapy Department

Am I eligible? All people with MS eligible to attend.

Services:

  • Out Patient Physiotherapy service:
    • 1 on 1 Physiotherapist Assessment & Development of a Home Exercise Programme or Gym Programme in the out patient department
    • Group Sessions
  • Physiotherapist Supervised Gym:
    • Monday, Wednesday & Friday 11.00am-12.00pm
    • Small numbers in the gym (4 people maximum)
    • Each person performing their own physiotherapist prescribed exercise programme
    • Group Sessions
  • Chronic Disease Self Management Courses available
    • All people with MS eligible to attend
    • Programme co-ordinated by the Community Health Nurse at the hospital (Helen Ferrier)
  • Clients can self refer to the programme (4681 5261) or can get a referral from an allied health professional; physiotherapist, occupational therapist, social worker or MS Society’s, Regional Services Co-ordinator (RSC) for the Southwest Region (1 800 177 591).

6. The Physiotherapy Centre (Stanthorpe)

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend.

Services: Physiotherapy Services...

  • 1 on 1 Assessment (Neurological or Musculoskeletal) and treatment in clinic rooms
  • Development of individualised exercise programmes for home
  • Clinic currently open 2 days per week; Wednesday and Friday (Physiotherapist travels from The Physiotherapy Centre in Warwick).

7. Mal Jackson Physiotherapy (Stanthorpe)

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible to attend.

Availability: There is generally a waiting list to see Mal Jackson. This varies and the administrative staff will tell you when you phone them.

  • Development of individualised Pilates exercise programmes.

8. Granite Belt Support Service (Stanthorpe)

Am I eligible? Everybody with MS is eligible to attend.

Availability: All referrals are prioritised and a timely assessment follows this.

Services: 

  • This is an incorporated community organisation working towards improving the quality of life of people with disabilities in the Granite Belt Region. They aim to assist people to be included in all aspects of community life. Services include:
    • Occupational Therapy
    • Speech Pathology
    • Respite care or family support programmes
    • Adult lifestyle programmes.

Cost: There is no cost to attend this service.

 

9. YMCA Stanthorpe

Am I eligible?

  • Everybody with MS who has the capacity to self fund the service is eligible for membership of the YMCA
  • On your first visit to the gym the personal trainer running the class will go through a medical screening/clearance form with you to ensure you are suited to the class.

  • Gym opening hours:
    • Monday- Friday: 8:30am – 7:30pm

  • Kim Gaffney:Personal trainer at the gym (BSc Sport and Exercise)

  • NEW ‘HEART MOVES WITH MS’ CLASS at Stanthorpe YMCA on Tuesday 14 February 2012 at 11.00am. Cost is $5. The class will be held weekly if there is enough interest.

      A Medical Screening Form can be picked up from Therese Crisp at the Granite belt Support Service, 44 Short Street, Stanthorpe QLD 4380 or phone (07) 4681 3020. Alternatively if it is not possible for you to pick up the form it may be posted out to you if you request this when you ring the Granite Belt Support Centre.
